Find your moon sign

The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so a birth date usually settles it — but if you were born on a day it changed, the time decides. Enter what you know.

What your Moon sign is

Your Sun sign is where the Sun was on your birthday. Your Moon sign is where the Moon was — and because the Moon crosses a sign every two and a half days, two people born on the same date can easily have different Moon signs.

Traditionally the Moon describes the private half of the personality: what you need rather than what you project, how you self-soothe, what you were like as a child, and what you revert to under stress. It is the placement people most often recognise immediately once they find it.

Why you need a birth time

The Moon moves roughly 13° a day, so it changes sign every 55 hours or so. If you were born near an ingress, the difference between 6am and 6pm is the difference between two signs.

An approximate time is usually enough. If you have no time at all, enter noon: you will get the right answer for about four days out of five, and the calculator shows the degree so you can see how close to a boundary you landed. A Moon at 2° or 28° of a sign is the case to double-check.

Reading the degree

The degree within the sign matters more for the Moon than for slower bodies, for the same reason:

  • 0°–5° — the Moon has just arrived. Check your birth time if you can.
  • 6°–24° — comfortably inside the sign; the reading is safe.
  • 25°–29° — about to leave. Again, worth verifying the time.

Sun, Moon and rising

The three placements most people start with divide up roughly like this: the Sun is what you are working towards, the Moon is what you fall back on, and the rising sign is what people meet first. A chart where all three agree produces someone very recognisable; one where they disagree produces someone who is regularly told they are not what people expected.

If the Moon sign you get here does not sound like you, that is worth sitting with rather than dismissing — the Moon is frequently the part of a chart people do not perform in public and do not much like admitting to.
