Transits, in one page
Astrology divides into two halves. The natal half describes the chart you were born with and does not change. The transit half describes where the planets are now, and how those current positions relate to that fixed birth picture. Everything predictive in astrology comes from the second half.
If you have ever wondered why a horoscope column can say anything at all about a stranger, this is the mechanism: transiting planets move through the same twelve signs for everybody, and a sun-sign column measures their position from your sign.
The three questions a transit answers
Which planet? determines what kind of thing is happening. Mercury transits are about information; Venus about relationship and value; Mars about drive and conflict; Saturn about limits and structure; Jupiter about expansion, including the unhelpful kind.
Which house? determines where in your life it lands. Counted whole-sign from your own sign, the houses run from the first — you, your body, how you come across — round to the twelfth, which covers rest, endings and everything happening off-stage.
Which aspect? determines how it feels. Trines and sextiles arrive as ease and are correspondingly easy to waste. Squares and oppositions arrive as friction and are the ones people actually change their lives around.
Timing
The useful thing about transits is that they are calculable in advance, indefinitely. The exact dates of every Saturn square for the rest of your life are already determined.
Speed sets the resolution of the forecast:
