Orb. How far an aspect is from being exact, measured in degrees. A smaller orb means a stronger effect.
What a transit is
A transit is simply where a planet is now, as opposed to where it was when you were born. The chart above shows current geocentric positions and the aspects currently forming between them — the sky as it actually stands, computed at build time and dated on the card.
Transits are what horoscope columns are made of. When a monthly forecast says "Mars enters your tenth house", it means the transiting Mars has moved into a particular thirty-degree slice measured from your sign.
Reading the wheel
The circle is the ecliptic, divided into the twelve signs, with 0° Aries at the left and the signs running counter-clockwise. Each planet sits at its real longitude. The lines across the middle are the aspects — the significant angles between planets:
- Conjunction (0°) — the two act as one.
- Sextile (60°) and trine (120°) — cooperative, drawn in teal.
- Square (90°) and opposition (180°) — frictional, drawn in red.
- Quincunx (150°) — no natural relationship, drawn in violet.
Dashed lines are separating: the aspect has already been exact and is fading. Solid lines are applying — still tightening, and traditionally read as the ones still to play out.
Orbs, and why an aspect has a width
An aspect is rarely exact. The orb is how far from exact it can be and still count; conventional values are around 7–8° for the major aspects, wider when the Sun or Moon is involved because the luminaries are given more latitude in every tradition.
That width is why a transit is felt as a period rather than a moment. A Mars square that is exact on a Thursday is in orb for roughly a week either side.
Fast and slow
The distinction that matters most in practice is speed. The Moon aspects everything within a couple of days and means very little on its own. Mercury, Venus and Mars set the tone for days to weeks. Jupiter and Saturn describe the year. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that a single aspect can be in orb for two years, which is why they are read as background conditions rather than events.
When several fast bodies pile onto the same slow aspect, that is when a long background transit becomes a week you remember.
