One card, one day

A single card is a different instrument from a spread. A three-card reading answers a question; a card of the day gives you a lens to carry around and check against what actually happens. It works best if you draw once, in the morning, and then leave it alone.

The habit that makes this useful is deliberately unglamorous: note the card, note one sentence about what you expect from the day, and look at both in the evening. After a fortnight you will have a record of how you read cards, which is more informative than any single reading.

Reading a card without a spread

With no surrounding cards, three questions do most of the work:

1. What is the card doing? Look at the image before the keyword. Somebody in the picture is usually either holding on to something or letting go of it.
2. Where does that show up today? Not in general — today, in a specific meeting, message or decision you already know is coming.
3. What would the opposite look like? If the card says patience, what would impatience cost you by six o'clock? That is usually the actual advice.

Majors on a daily draw

Pulling a major arcana card as a daily draw is common and does not mean the day is momentous. On a one-card draw, treat majors as themes rather than events: The Hermit is a day that goes better alone, not a summons to a monastery. Save the dramatic readings for spreads where other cards can qualify them.

Court cards

Kings, Queens, Knights and Pages on a daily draw usually point at a person — sometimes you, more often someone you will deal with. If a court card arrives, the useful question is which mode you are about to be in: the Page learns, the Knight charges, the Queen sustains, the King decides. Days go wrong when you pick the wrong one for the situation.

What this is not

A daily card does not predict events and nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice. It is a prompt for attention. The deck is shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random generator on every draw, nothing is recorded, and drawing again is free — though a second draw usually tells you more about your mood than about your day.
