How to read the three-card spread

The spread above deals three cards: past, present and what is forming. It is the oldest working layout in tarot because it maps onto the only question people actually bring — how did I get here, where am I, and where is this going? — without requiring you to memorise a Celtic Cross.

Read the cards as a sentence rather than three separate answers. A difficult card in the past position often explains a defensive card in the present. A bright card in the third position after two heavy ones is not a promise; it is a description of what becomes available if the present card is dealt with.

Major and minor arcana

If your spread is mostly major arcana — The Tower, The Star, Death, The Wheel — the situation is larger than your daily choices. Majors describe forces you are inside of rather than decisions you are making. A spread of mostly minor arcana is the opposite: ordinary life, ordinary levers, things you can change this week.

The four minor suits divide the same way the elements do:

• Wands (fire) — drive, projects, the thing you want to make happen.
• Cups (water) — feeling, relationship, what you actually care about.
• Swords (air) — thought, conflict, the conversation you are avoiding.
• Pentacles (earth) — money, work, the body, what is measurable.

Count the suits before you read the cards individually. Four Swords in a row is a message on its own.

Reversals

This spread draws upright cards only. Reversals are a legitimate technique, but they double the number of meanings a beginner has to hold, and most of what a reversal is used to say — blocked, delayed, internalised — can be read from the surrounding cards instead. If you want reversals, use a physical deck; the interpretation habits transfer.

What a tarot reading is for

Tarot is not a forecasting instrument and this page does not pretend it is. What a spread reliably does is externalise a question — you see your situation described in someone else's images and notice which parts you resist. That reaction is the useful output. Read the card, then notice what you wanted it to say instead.
