Personal year, and why it is not your birth year

Numerology's personal year cycle runs from birthday to birthday and repeats every nine years. It is calculated from your birth day and month plus the current year, reduced to a single digit — so it is personal in a way the universal year (which is the same for everybody) is not.

The calculator above does both, since the two interact: a personal 1 year inside a universal 2 year behaves differently from a personal 1 inside a universal 8.

The nine-year cycle

• 1 — beginning. New direction, usually with less support than you would like.
• 2 — partnership and patience. Slow, relational, and frustrating if you are still in year 1's mindset.
• 3 — expression, visibility, social expansion. The year things get noticed.
• 4 — work and foundations. Unglamorous, and the year that determines whether 3's visibility turns into anything.
• 5 — change and movement. Traditionally the least predictable year in the cycle.
• 6 — responsibility, home, other people's needs. Often the year of a commitment.
• 7 — withdrawal and analysis. Read as an inward year; pushing for external results tends not to work.
• 8 — power, money, consequence. The harvest year of the cycle.
• 9 — completion. Endings, clearing, and preparation for the next 1.

Life path, and how it differs

Your life path number comes from your full birth date reduced to a single digit (or to 11, 22 or 33, the master numbers, which are conventionally left unreduced). Unlike the personal year it never changes — it is read as the overall shape of a life rather than the current chapter.

The pairing is the useful part. A life path 4 in a personal 5 year is being asked to do something genuinely uncomfortable; a life path 5 in the same year is in its element.

Master numbers

11, 22 and 33 are held back from reduction in most systems. They are traditionally read as the same underlying number (2, 4, 6) at higher intensity and with a correspondingly higher failure mode — 11 as 2's sensitivity turned up until it becomes anxiety, 22 as 4's capacity for building turned up until it becomes pressure.

What this is

Numerology is a symbolic system, not an empirical one, and nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice. Its practical value is as a framing device: a personal 7 year is a good excuse to give yourself permission to withdraw, and that permission is often the whole benefit.
