What the rising sign is

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is the fastest-changing thing in a birth chart — the whole zodiac rises once every 24 hours, so the ascendant advances about one degree every four minutes.

That speed is exactly why it is personal. Everybody born on your birthday shares your Sun sign. Almost nobody shares your ascendant to the degree.

What it describes

The traditional reading is that the ascendant is the interface: how you come across before anyone knows you, the manner you meet a room with, and often your physical bearing. It is the part of the chart other people meet first and the part you are least aware of, because you cannot see yourself arriving.

A useful test: if people consistently describe you as something that does not match your Sun sign at all, the description is often the ascendant.

Why it also decides your houses

The ascendant is the cusp of the first house, and the other eleven follow from it. Change the ascendant and every planet in the chart changes house — which is to say, changes which area of life it operates in. This is why an accurate birth time matters far more than most people expect, and why a chart cast for noon by default is a chart with no usable houses.

Sun, Moon and rising together

The three form a rough but durable summary:

• Sun — what you are moving towards; your core motivation.
• Moon — what you need; your private, unperformed self.
• Rising — how you arrive; the first impression.

People whose three placements agree tend to be read accurately by strangers. People whose Sun and rising are in tension are the ones who are repeatedly told "you're not what I expected".

Reading your own chart with a rising sign

Once you know your ascendant, you can read horoscope columns by rising sign instead of Sun sign. Many astrologers recommend it, because house-based forecasts — which is what most monthly columns actually are — are calculated from the first house, and your real first house starts at your ascendant.

Try both for a month and see which one describes your weeks better. That is a more honest test than any argument about which is correct.
