The Elder Futhark

The runes drawn above come from the Elder Futhark, the oldest recorded runic alphabet, in use across Northern Europe from roughly the second to the eighth century. Twenty-four characters, each a letter and a concept: Fehu is both the sound "f" and cattle, which in an agrarian economy meant portable wealth.

That double life is why runes read differently from tarot. A tarot card is a picture designed to be interpreted. A rune is a word — blunter, older, and much less inclined to be reassuring.

The three aettir

The twenty-four runes divide into three groups of eight, called aettir:

• Freyr's aett — the material world: property, cattle, journeys, gifts, weather.
• Heimdall's aett — disruption and endurance: hail, need, ice, harvest, defence.
• Tyr's aett — the social and personal: law, growth, inheritance, day, home.

Which aett your draw comes from is worth noticing before you read the individual meaning. A reading weighted to the second aett is describing conditions rather than choices.

How to read a rune draw

Runes answer questions about situation better than questions about outcome. Phrase what you want to know as "what is going on with…" rather than "will…". The traditional reading of a difficult rune such as Hagalaz (hail) is not misfortune but interruption — the storm that ends the growing season also clears the field.

Note that several runes are symmetrical and have no reversed form. In the older sources, this is not treated as a gap; a symmetrical rune simply says one thing.

Runes and prediction

The historical record on divinatory use is thinner than modern books suggest. What is well attested is runes as writing and as inscription — on weapons, stones and jewellery, often naming the maker or invoking protection. The systematised divinatory practice most people now use dates largely from the twentieth century.

That does not make it useless. It does mean the honest framing is a structured prompt drawn from a genuinely old symbol set, rather than a recovered ancient oracle. Runes do not predict events, and nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice.
